Following two critically-acclaimed EPs: 2018’s Friends EP and 2019’s Stereo, Omar Apollo has officially released a brand new debut album titled Apolonio. Together with the album, the musician also shared the music video for his single “Kamikaze.”
Titled after his middle name, Apolonio features guest vocals by Kali Uchis and British-Australian singer Ruel, as well as contributions from Parliament-Funkadelic legend Bootsy Collins and Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. Omar even introduced some singing in Spanish in honor of his Mexican-American heritage.
The album is surprisingly funky and nostalgic, blending the common sound of love ballads with modern elements and soulful singing. On the lyrical side, it’s vulnerable, heartfelt, and triumphant, as the storytelling mostly taps into Apollo’s adventures of finding (and losing) love in his early 20s.
